The
Raleigh Jazz Orchestra is under the direction of Dr. Neal Finn. Dr.
Finn brings excellent leadership and years of musical experience and
expertise to our organization. His jazz composition and arranging
skills are legendary.
Dr. Neal Finn has been involved in
jazz education for the past twenty years in California, Colorado and
Arizona. He directed jazz ensembles at the University of
Arizona and University of Northern Colorado as well as teaching jazz
pedagogy, composition, history and improvisation. From
1998 to 2004 he directed the jazz studies program at California
State University at Long Beach. Currently he is a professor of
instrumental music/jazz at Fayetteville State University in N.
Carolina.
His professional credits include performances with jazz artists
such as Clark Terry, Dave Brubeck, Louis Bellson, Nick Brignola,
Carl Fontana, Sunny Wilkenson and Manhattan Transfer. His
compositions and arrangements have been performed and recorded by
artists such as Bill Watrous, Louis Bellson, Eric Marienthal and
Connaitre Miller. His compositions are published by
Walrus Music of California, UNC Jazz Press of Colorado and Sierra
Music Publications of Washington and are often performed by high
school and college/university jazz ensembles
nationally.
